Bed bug preparation guide: seal laundry, clear access, arrange time out and follow re-entry instructions.

To prepare for bed bug treatment, bag and launder all bedding and clothing, declutter the rooms being treated, pull furniture away from the walls, vacuum thoroughly and keep everything in the treated rooms. Don’t throw out your mattress or move items to other rooms: that spreads bed bugs. Good preparation lets the treatment reach every hiding place, and it’s the biggest thing you can do to make it work the first time.

Use this checklist in the days before your appointment. Your technician may add specific instructions for your home, condo or apartment.

3–7 days before: plan and don’t spread them

  • Don’t move furniture, mattresses or belongings to other rooms or homes. Bed bugs travel with them.
  • Keep sleeping in your own bed. Moving to the couch draws bed bugs to new places.
  • Tell your landlord or property manager in writing if you rent or live in a condo; neighbouring units may need inspecting.
  • Buy clear plastic bags (heavy-duty) and, if you can, zippered bed bug-proof mattress and box spring encasements.
  • Book a time when everyone, including pets, can be out for the re-entry period your technician gives you.

1–2 days before: laundry and bagging

  • Strip all beds: sheets, pillowcases, duvets, mattress pads, bed skirts.
  • Wash and machine-dry bedding and clothing from the treated rooms on the highest setting the care label allows, then seal it straight into clean plastic bags.
  • Bag items that can’t be washed (stuffed toys, shoes, cushions) and set them aside for your technician to check.
  • Empty closets and dressers in the treated rooms into sealed bags so the technician can reach every seam and joint. Keep the bags in the room.
  • Don’t unpack the bags until after the follow-up visit.

The day before: clear access

  • Declutter the floor, especially around and under the bed and along walls. Clutter gives bed bugs places to hide.
  • Pull beds, couches and dressers about 30 cm away from the walls.
  • Remove items from under the bed and bag them.
  • Vacuum floors, baseboards, mattress seams and furniture, then seal the vacuum bag or contents in a plastic bag and put it in an outside garbage bin right away.
  • Take down wall hangings near the bed if your technician asks.

Treatment day

  • Arrange for people and pets to be out of the treated rooms for the time your technician specifies.
  • Cover or remove fish tanks and turn off air pumps if asked.
  • Leave access to beds, furniture, closets and baseboards.
  • Show the technician where you’ve seen bed bugs or bites.

After treatment

  • Stay out until the re-entry time has passed, then ventilate the rooms.
  • Keep sleeping in your own bed. You’re the reason bed bugs come out, and that helps the treatment reach them.
  • Put encasements on the mattress and box spring if you have them.
  • Don’t clean along baseboards and furniture seams until your technician says it’s fine.
  • Keep bagged items sealed until after the follow-up visit.
  • Expect to see a few bed bugs for a short time as eggs hatch; that’s why the follow-up visit matters.

Why a follow-up visit is part of every treatment

Bed bug eggs are protected and hatch over the following days. A follow-up treatment, usually about two weeks after the first, catches newly hatched nymphs before they’re old enough to lay eggs. Skipping it is the most common reason bed bugs come back.

Condo and apartment tips

Bed bugs move between units through walls, pipes and hallways. In multi-unit buildings, the best results come when the affected unit and the units around it are inspected together. Property managers can read how we handle building-wide pest control.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I throw out my mattress if I have bed bugs?

Usually not. Mattresses and box springs can be treated and then protected with bed bug-proof encasements. Throwing them out often spreads bed bugs through hallways and stairwells, and a new mattress can be re-infested if the room isn't treated.

How long do I have to stay out after bed bug treatment?

It depends on the products used. Your technician gives you a specific re-entry time before starting; people and pets stay out of treated rooms until then.

Why do I need a second bed bug treatment?

Bed bug eggs are protected and hatch over the following days, so a follow-up treatment, usually about two weeks later, catches the young bugs before they can lay eggs of their own.

Can I sleep in my bed after treatment?

Yes, once the re-entry time has passed. Keep sleeping in the same bed: moving to the couch or another room can draw bed bugs to new places.

Who pays for bed bug treatment in a rental in GTA?

In GTA, landlords are generally responsible for keeping rental units free of pests, and tenants are expected to report the problem promptly and prepare the unit. This is general information, not legal advice.
